The principles set forth are illustrated by many photos and drawings to show more clearly ideas that may not be so easily understandable in mere words, showing some examples of the best configurations and some of the worst. Some are pictures of actual accident sites where real people were badly injured. Some photos show "before" and "after" scenes of facilities that were so hazardous as to require reconstruction in order to curtail the carnage.
Full treatment is given to human factors principles involved in the three basic types of falls, and practical design parameters are shown for safety of floors, stairs, ramps, parking lots and sidewalks and curbs. Guidelines for signs and warnings, retail displays and ice and snow control are also given.
